Inspiration from Bryson Foster

Bryson describes muscular dystrophy as “a muscle disease that makes every muscle in your body weak,” including the heart, the “biggest muscle in the body.” Due to this disease, Bryson misses out on a lot of “normal” 16-year-old things, and reflects that the hardest part about DMD is seeing others walk when he is unable. Life for Bryson and his parents Phil and Claire Foster, has been hard, but he has a strength greater than most.

Bryson was the National Muscular Dystrophy Ambassador in 2012 and 2013. Bryson was chosen to share his voice with the world as the National Muscular Dystrophy Ambassador, and he did not take this role lightly as he successfully inspired thousands with his spirit, raised awareness and funds to find a cure. Bryson has appeared on MDA’s telethons like many other National Ambassadors — often with longtime telethon host Jerry Lewis — and other forums such as “Larry King Live,” “Oprah,” “Today,” and “Good Morning America.” Ambassadors have graced more than 15 covers of Parade magazine and served as guests of honor at Walt Disney World, Disneyland and the Rose Parade.

Today, MDA ambassadors, like Bryson, continue to play an essential role in motivating millions to help MDA through donations or volunteer action. Former ambassadors have grown up to achieve distinction, transitioning into adulthood while earning advanced degrees and making their marks as authors, educators, bloggers, musicians, artists and successful business professionals. Bryson’s voice and strength will ring out as an inspiration not only for those with muscular dystrophy, but everyone.

Bryson’s attitude is truly inspirational. He lives with a disease that has taken away his ability to walk, an ability that many of us take for granted, yet he feels grateful that “God gives me a day to live every day,” and that despite being harder than anyone can imagine, Bryson still shares that “as long as I can help people, it is okay.” DMA affects muscles including the heart, but Bryson’s heart is strong and full as it is overflows with love for life and others’ around him.
